- A small group of stylish contemporary
hotels owned by a German group -ALT Hotel Quebec City is a newly
refurbished hotel of 126 rooms, located in the city's bustling
business district; Quartier Dix30 in Montreal is a newly constructed
14-story tower with 159 rooms located in the heart of Brossard's
new lifestyle center. They set a strong environmental agenda,
and the Montreal Hotels claims up to 35 per cent savings on energy
bills thanks to a geothermal heating system.

- A resort hotel and conference
centre in Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, 90 miles
from Calgary. Although large, with more than 200 rooms, they
were the first independant hotel in Canada to win a four green
leaf rating for their environmental performance -they run a number
of green programmes and are in the process of installing a new
roof made from recycled plastic and crumb rubber tyres.

be found on Princess Royal Island and has magnificent views of
the surrounding landscape. Provides guests with the opportunity

together with Parks Canada and scientists to minimise its impact
on the surrounding area and promotes sustainable eco-tourism.

purpose made scientific observation platform from which you can

Programmes initiated by The Colony Hotel Ecology Group include
solid waste reduction, material reuse, recycling, energy and
water conservation, and hazardous waste elimination. They also
try to put this message out with an education and communications
campaign designed to raise environmental awareness in employees

- This luxurious beach complex
boasts some impressive green credentials -it was the first hotel
in Maine to be heated with Biofuel; it also has a solar heated
pool and air to air heat exchangers. Other features include dual
flush toilets, recycled rubber floors in the cardio room, low
VOC paints and Green Seal cleaning products. Outside there are
five acres of indigenous gardens certified as a Wildlife Habitat.

spa is dedicated to the environment, with reclaimed furniture,
non-toxic paints and organic uniforms. The spa reopens for the
next season in May 2009.

Council standards, this hotel describes itself as San fransisco's
first green boutique hotel. They feature luxury 'green' rooms
with key card energy control systems and recycled paper products,
and offer guest the Greenopia Guide to 'green' living in San
Francisco. They encourage guests to use environmentally friendly
transport, using a hybrid Toyota Prius for transfers and offering
rental bikes to explore the city.

food for the dining room. They carry out sustainable projects
with Fundación La Puerta, whose mission is to promote

rooms and every conceivable facility. They have an extensive
list of environmental initiatives ranging from target of zero
waste to providing free bicycles for guests. Would be good if
they could move towards renewable energy as well.

- Luxury eco hotel and ski lodging
with 72 rooms, suites and studios. All the rooms are fantastically
equipped including flat screen tv, surround sound, wifi, ipod
docking, natural mattresses, organic sheets and much more. The
hotels has impressive eco credentials, and is pending LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Measures include
energy effecient heating and cooling, radiant underfloor heating,
water conservation, very low embodied energy construction, with
a high degree of recycled/recyclable materials -the list goes
on and on -this is definitely one of the most truly environmentally
friendly hotels we have seen.

kayaking, mountain biking or simply just relax in beautiful countryside.
Uses 100% bio fuel and solar energy systems, along with water

the refurbishment.

by Union Square founded by nine San Francisco artists. The hotel
has an extensive eco friendly programme, including recycling,
water conservation, non toxic cleaning agents and low energy
light fittings. They also have alliances with a number of social

policy

- A small eco-friendly boutique
spa resort on the Oregon coast. Accommodation is in five stylish
cabins, built from native cedar and nestled among 100 foot trees.
The cabins are filled with artwork, plush, overstuffed loveseats,
and antique furniture. At the heart of WildSpring is the spa,
with its open-air slate hot tub/spa overlooking the ocean, in
a glade surrounded by tall trees. Everything they do has been
designed to have a minimum impact on the environment -low impact
in construction, minimal energy consumption in use and they ask
guests to participate in energy saving measures.

- A well organised guide to eco
friendly escapes around the world, interspersed with ideas for
ethical travel. Just seems a little strange to come from AA publishing,
but none the worse for that.
