- The oldest operating hostel
in the United States, it was originally founded by Josephine
and Frank Duveneck in 1937. Nowadays it is run by a non-profit
organization with the mission of "Inspiring a just and sustainable
future through our programs, land and legacy". With a beautiful
setting on a 1,600-acre organic farm and wilderness preserve
in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountain, it offers miles
of hiking trails. The main building was rebuilt in 2001 to showcase
environmentally sustainable technology and design.

- A proposed new facility, part
of the Centre for Sustainable Living, the Eco-Hostel is designed
to offer lodging for 92 people in double occupancy rooms, dorms
and eco-cottages, on a three acre waterfront site. The Centre
provides environmental research, sustainability conferences,
Green business incubation, exhibits and tours and hands-on workshops.

and they run a series of sustainability workshops.

-it is both a spiritual retreat, and a hostel for travelers.
They teach a hands-on approach to a sustainable lifestyle with
activities such as alternative building and organic gardening.
Accommodation is in geodesic domes and a bunkhouse built by volunteers
in 120 acres of forest and wetlands. Strong on green issues -especially
use of energy and recycling, they take a stand against plastics,
which you will be asked to take home with you.

- Describes itself as one of the
most eco-friendly hostels in Hawaii -their aim is to "Reduce,
Reuse and Recycle". They have just ten spaces on offer,
over a 4 acre rainforest site. There are a variety of lodging
options -tent, hut, cotage or love-bus. They also run a volunteer
programme with a variety of interesting roles from artists to
eco-builders.

- A "Hippie Heritage"
rustic eco-hostel located within the center of The Farm,
one of the USA's most successful intentional communities, and
home to Gaia University. The hostel is a converted multi-family
dwelling dating from early days of the Farm -it was originally
constructed from scrap Army tents and recycled windows, lumber
and nails. There are three dormitories, three private bedrooms,
two cabins and a campground which provide a comfortable lodging
experience.

- Developed as a sustainable living
centre, HI Austin has been collecting power from the solar panels
on its roof, replacing them with second generation PVs in 2003.
The hostel is a member of the City of Austin Green Choice Programme,
supporting wind power, and is big on recycling. As well as serving
the wider public, they often provide accommodation non-profit
groups, and especially encourages those concerned with environmental
education.
