Walking and Trekking
There
are two things trhat have made it possible to walk widely and
freely in Britain. The first is a huge and ancient network of
Public Footpaths and Rights of Way -the are some 130,000 miles
of footpath in the UK -see the Ramblers
for more on their history. The second thing is that the UK enjoys
some of the best maps in the world thanks to Ordnance
Survey.
If you walk in other countries,
you will need to bear in mind that rights to walk and available
routs may not be anything like as extensive as they are in the
UK -do your research before setting out, otherwise you could
find yourself walking alongside busy and unpleasant six lane
highways.
Rights of walkers in the UK were
cemented in the 2006 Countryside
and Rights of Way Act which introduced a responsible right
to roam on uncultivated countryside -see the Defra
website for more background information.
